Etymology: < well adv. + balanced adj.In quot. a1616 at sense 1, the emendation to welle-ballanc'd (first suggested by N. Rowe in 1709) is now generally accepted, since an interpretation of the Folio reading weale-ballanc'd as showing weal n.1 as its first element encounters considerable semantic difficulties (see further the Oxford edition by N. Bawcutt (1991)).
