(originally) familiar with a road, route, or journey; expert in finding the right route; (later also in extended use, chiefly regional) experienced in the ways of the world, a particular occupation, etc.Use in the 19th cent. in the original sense is also chiefly regional, with reference to a working animal, esp. a horse, that is experienced and fully trained; cf. earlier wayed adj.2
