单词 | waterwort |
释义 | waterwortn. 1. Either of two ferns with delicate fronds, the maidenhair fern, Adiantum capillus-veneris, and maidenhair spleenwort, Asplenium trichomanes (see maidenhair n. 1) (now regional). Formerly also occasionally (as in quots. 1784, 1807): †a water dropwort, genus Oenanthe (obsolete). The sense before the mid 15th cent. is uncertain. Reference to maidenhair spleenwort is usually considered the most likely possibility, but hemp agrimony or water crowfoot have also been suggested for glosses such as quot. a1400.In quot. 1656: a different plant, perhaps an error for wartwort (cf. turnsole n. 2c).
