Etymology: < water n. + shoot n.1 With sense 1 compare Dutch waterschoot (1533), waterscheut (1551); compare earlier water-bough n. and discussion at that entry. With use with reference to fast-flowing water (see senses 2 and 3) compare Middle Low German waterschutte , German †Wasserschuss (late 14th cent., apparently earliest with reference to a mill race), both with a related second element (see shute n.1). With these senses compare also earlier waterfall n. Compare also watershot n. With sense 3b compare earlier water chute n. at water n. Compounds 7 and water slide n. 1b.
