释义

Waterlandern.

Brit. /ˈwɔːtələndə/, U.S. /ˈwɔdərlændər/, /ˈwɑdərlændər/
Forms: 1600s– Waterlander, 1800s Waterländer.
Origin: From a proper name, combined with an English element; modelled on a Dutch lexical item. Etymons: proper name Waterland , -er suffix1.
Etymology: < Waterland, the name of a region in North Holland, Netherlands (Dutch Waterland , specific use of waterland waterland n., on account of the marshy nature of the region) + -er suffix1, ultimately after Dutch (now hist.) Waterlander (1569 denoting a member of the Mennonite sect, 1585 or earlier denoting an inhabitant of the Dutch province). Compare post-classical Latin Waterlandi , plural noun (1583 or earlier), French †Waterlandois (1601 in the passage translated in quot. 1608, or earlier). The name of the region is attested in Dutch from the 13th cent. and in English from the beginning of the 17th cent. In form Waterländer probably after German Wasserländer (1747 or earlier denoting a member of the Mennonite sect, 1846 or earlier denoting an inhabitant of the Dutch province), itself after Dutch Waterlander.
Now historical.

Now historical. In 1554 the Mennonites divided into various sects, of which the Waterlanders are generally considered to have been the most liberal. Cf. Mennonite n., Anabaptist n.
