单词 water wash
释义

water washn.

Brit. /ˈwɔːtə wɒʃ/, U.S. /ˈwɔdər ˌwɔʃ/, /ˈwɑdər ˌwɑʃ/
Forms:

α. (In sense 1) 1500s water weshe, 1500s water wesshe, 1500s water wessh.

β. (In sense 2) 1600s– water wash.

Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: water n., wash n.
Etymology: In sense 1 probably < water n. + wash n. (compare wash n. 7c and see note). In sense 2 < water n. + wash n.With sense 1 compare the (rare) Old English compound wætergewæsc ( < water n. + gewæsc < y- prefix + either wash n. or wash v.), with uncertain sense, rendering post-classical Latin alluvium flood (see alluvium n.), perhaps specifically with reference to damage to the banks (compare Isidore Origines 14. 8. 42, the probable source):OE Antwerp-London Gloss. (2011) 127 Alluuium, wætergewæsc. Compare also Old English wætera gewæsc (in the same source), apparently in sense ‘flood of water’. It has been suggested that wash as a place-name element may in certain cases reflect Old English (weak feminine) -wæsce (in scēapwæsce sheep-wash n.) rather than (strong) (ge)wæsc (of uncertain gender), in which case the place name at sense 1 might alternatively mean ‘washing place’.
1. Perhaps: an area of ground adjoining a river and liable to flooding. Cf. wash n. 7c. Obsolete. rare.Apparently recorded only in the name of a single field adjoining the River Trent in North Wilford, Nottinghamshire. The name might alternatively be interpreted as meaning ‘washing place’; see note in etymology.
