Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: water n., thief n.
Etymology: < water n. + thief n. In sense 2 perhaps after classical Latin clepsydra or its etymon ancient Greek κλεψύδρα, lit. ‘water-stealer’ (see clepsydra n.); with this sense compare earlier clepsydra n.
1. Chiefly poetic. A pirate; (sometimes more generally) a person engaged in stealing, plunder, etc., who travels by water.
