Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymons: French waynepayn, gaignepain.
Etymology: < Anglo-Norman waynepayn, waynpayn and Old French (Lorraine) wagnepan, variants of gaignepain kind of gauntlet, of uncertain origin (see gainpain n.), but apparently associated (by folk etymology) with Old French gaaignepain (see waynpain n.2).It is also possible that the example in quot. c1312 is to be interpreted as showing the Anglo-Norman word.
Obsolete.
A gauntlet. Cf. gainpain n. 1.

Forms: Middle English waynpain, Middle English weinepain, late Middle English wanpan, late Middle English wanpayn, late Middle English waynpane, late Middle English waynpayn, late Middle English waypane; N.E.D. (1926) also records a form Middle English waynepayne.
Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymons: French waynpain, gaaignepain.
Etymology: < Anglo-Norman waynpain, waynpayn, apparently variants of Old French gaaignepain, gaignepain kind of low-paid labourer (late 13th cent.) < gaaignier to earn (see gain v.2; compare the rare Anglo-Norman variant wainier ) + pain bread (see pain n.2).
Obsolete.
A man who has to work for his bread; a servant; a labourer.Common in the account rolls of Durham Abbey in the 14th and 15th centuries (in the later part of the period usually as a surname).
