Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: water n., pepper n.
Etymology: < water n. + pepper n. With sense 1 compare Dutch waterpeper (1514 as †water pepere), German Wasserpfeffer (15th cent.), and also Hellenistic Greek ὑδροπέπερι, post-classical Latin hydropiper (15th cent. or earlier).Scientific Latin hydropiper was used by Linnaeus (1753) as a specific epithet for both Polygonum (now Persicaria) hydropiper (compare sense 1) and Elatine hydropiper (compare sense 2).
1. An erect annual herbaceous plant with a pungent taste, Persicaria hydropiper (formerly Polygonum hydropiper) (family Polygonaceae), typically growing in or near shallow water; also called smartweed and water pepperwort. In later use also (usually with distinguishing word): any of several similar plants of the genera Persicaria and Polygonum.
