However, it has been argued that place-name evidence (especially in the fenland of the east midlands; compare quot. 1224) shows that in the sense ‘channel for water’ unprefixed Old English lād lode n. was strongly preferred over prefixed gelād (which typically has a rather different sense denoting a marshy river crossing or similar); see M. Gelling and A. Cole Landscape of Place-names (2000) 20–1. Also attested early as a surname: Joh. ate Waterlade (1299).
