单词 water lade
释义

water laden.

Brit. /ˈwɔːtə ˌleɪd/, U.S. /ˈwɔdər ˌleɪd/, /ˈwɑdər ˌleɪd/
Forms:

α. Middle English waterlaþe (transmission error), Middle English waturlad, Middle English waturlade, Middle English 1600s 1800s waterlade; Scottish pre-1700 1900s– waterlade.

β. Middle English–1500s waterlode.

Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: water n., lode n.
Etymology: < water n. + lode n. With later use (in α. forms) compare lade n.2 Compare earlier water leat n.Perhaps also partly the reflex of Old English wætergelād aqueduct ( < water n. + Old English gelād way ( < y- prefix + lode n.; compare Old English gelǣdan to lead, bring, conduct)), with reduction and loss of the medial prefix. The Old English word is attested once rendering classical Latin aquaeductus aqueduct n.:eOE Cleopatra Gloss. in W. G. Stryker Lat.-Old Eng. Gloss. in MS Cotton Cleopatra A.III (Ph.D. diss., Stanford Univ.) (1951) 29 Aqueductuum, wætergelada. However, it has been argued that place-name evidence (especially in the fenland of the east midlands; compare quot. 1224) shows that in the sense ‘channel for water’ unprefixed Old English lād lode n. was strongly preferred over prefixed gelād (which typically has a rather different sense denoting a marshy river crossing or similar); see M. Gelling and A. Cole Landscape of Place-names (2000) 20–1. Also attested early as a surname: Joh. ate Waterlade (1299).
Now historical and rare.
A channel for water; an aqueduct.
