Origin: A borrowing from Chinook Jargon. Etymon: Chinook Jargon waptu.
Etymology: < Chinook Jargon waptu (also written wappatoo), apparently < an unattested Upper Chinookan borrowing of Northern Kalapuyan mam-pdu, with prefix substitution (replacing a Kalapuyan nominal prefix with a Chinookan feminine singular prefix).The Kalapuyan languages were a small family of languages spoken in Western Oregon.

A tuber of the North American arrowhead Sagittaria latifolia or other plant of the genus Sagittaria, traditionally used as food by North American Indians. Also: any of these plants.
