Origin: Either (i) a borrowing from Dutch. Or (ii) a borrowing from Middle Low German. Or (iii) a borrowing from German. Etymons: Dutch wandluis; Middle Low German wantlūs; German Wandlaus.
Etymology: < either Dutch wandluis (1514), Middle Low German wantlūs (Old Saxon wandlūs), or German †Wandlaus (Old High German, Middle High German wantlūs), with remodelling of the second element after louse n.The Germanic nouns reflect a formation < the Germanic base of Old Dutch, Middle Dutch want , Middle Low German want , Old High German want (Middle High German want , German Wand ), all in sense ‘wall’ ( < the same Germanic base as wind v.1, probably originally with reference to the twisted branches used to make wattle walls) + the Germanic base of louse n.
Obsolete. rare.
