单词 bumkin
释义

bumkinn.1

Brit. /ˈbʌmkɪn/, U.S. /ˈbəmkən/
Forms: 1600s– bumkin, 1700s– boomkin, 1700s– bumpkin.
Origin: Apparently formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: boom n.2, -kin suffix.
Etymology: Apparently < boom n.2 (although this is first attested slightly later with reference to spars on a ship) + -kin suffix. It is possible that this word was borrowed from Dutch boomken small tree, small beam (now regional (southern); Middle Dutch boomkijn ; < boom tree, beam, (in early modern Dutch also) boom, spar (see beam n.1 and compare boom n.2) + -kijn -kin suffix), although in Dutch, this diminutive form is apparently not recorded with reference to spars on a ship. The usual Dutch word for the bumkin is botteloef (1598).
Nautical.
Any short spar projecting from the hull of a ship or boat to allow a line to be extended beyond the hull; esp. (a) each of two short spars that project from each side of the bow of a ship to extend the lower edge of the foresail to windward; (b) a similar spar used to extend the mainsail or mizzensail in the same way; (c) (later) a short spar extending aft from the stern, used to hold a backstay in place.
