Origin: Probably a borrowing from Massachusett. Etymon: Massachusett Wampompeage.
Etymology: Probably < Massachusett Wampompeage (1634, glossed ‘Indian money’), cognate with Eastern Abenaki (Caniba) wʌ̃pʌ̃pəyak (recorded in 1691, glossed ‘white wampum beads’) < wʌ̃p- white + ʌ̃pəy- string + -ak, animate plural ending (compare the singular form wʌ̃pʌ̃pi).Compare slightly later wampum n. and peag n., which are products of shortening within English (apparently by false analysis: two-word forms such as wampam peke are attested as early as 1638).
Now historical.
Small cylindrical beads made from shells and strung together, used by some eastern North American Indian peoples for trade and ornament, and by European settlers as a currency; = wampum n. 1a.
