Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin bīgātus.
Etymology: < classical Latin bīgātus (adjective) stamped with the image of a two-horsed chariot, (noun) coin stamped with this image (use as noun (probably short for nummus bīgātus bigate coin) of masculine of adjective) < bīga biga n. + -ātus -ate suffix2.
Numismatics and Roman History. Now rare.
Of a coin, esp. a Roman denarius: stamped with the figure of a biga. Also as n.: a coin of this type.
