Forms: 1900s– walla, 1900s– wallah. Often reduplicated one or more times.
Origin: An imitative or expressive formation.
Etymology: Imitative of the sound of indistinct speech.It is not clear whether the following quotation is using the expression in the same sense:1924 Amer. Mercury Nov. 372/2 These plays have been either sentimental walla-walla or tragic nonsense.
Chiefly Film and Broadcasting (originally and chiefly U.S.).

Reduplicated, as walla walla, etc.: used by actors to represent the indistinct murmuring noise of a crowd. Cf. rhubarb n. 4a.Now usually historical; walla actors (see branch B.) usually use real (often improvised) words and phrases.

Later: background dialogue and other sounds recorded by voice actors and added to a soundtrack post-production to provide authenticity; frequently attributive, as walla actor, walla group, walla session, etc.
