Etymology: < bum- (compare bumleaf n. and see note) + card n.²Although the identity and origin of the first element are both unknown, it appears to be reflected at a similar date and in a similar context in bumleaf n. It is possible that the element bum- in these formations refers to a technique of illicitly causing a card or page (or a part thereof) to protrude, enabling the conjuror or card-player to identify it by touch, which might suggest connection with apparently imitative formations such as bump n.² and bum n.¹ (see discussion at that entry). However, neither of these nouns shows a closely connected sense, and evidence to support this conjecture is lacking.
