Etymology: < walking adj. + leaf n.1 Compare post-classical Latin folia ambulans (1623 or earlier).
1. Any of various insects belonging to the phasmid genus Phyllium or related genera, the female of which has a flattened body and limbs with irregular outlines and markings, closely resembling a leaf. Also walking leaf insect.Early naturalists mistakenly supposed such insects to develop from the leaves of certain exotic trees: cf. quot. 1659.
