Origin: Probably of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Probably partly formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: Latin vociferator ; vociferate v., -or suffix.
Etymology: Originally < post-classical Latin vociferator loud speaker (early 3rd cent. in Tertullian) < classical Latin vōciferāt- , past participial stem of vōciferārī vociferate v. + -or -or suffix. In later use probably re-formed < vociferate v. + -or suffix.Compare the following earlier occurrence of Latin vociferator in the designation Bootes vociferator for the constellation Boötes (compare quot. 1639) in an English context:1594 T. Blundeville Exercises iv. xix. f. 219 The left leg and left arme of Bubulcus, otherwise called Bootes vociferator, Arctophilax and Lanceator.
A person who vociferates or is vociferous.In quot. 1639 as an alternative name for the constellation Boötes; cf. note in etymology.
