Origin: A borrowing from German. Etymon: German Miracidium.
Etymology: < German Miracidium (H. Braun 1893, in Bronn's Klassen u. Ordnungen des Thier-Reichs: Vermes I. 776) < Hellenistic Greek μειρακίδιον boy, lad < ancient Greek μειρακ- , μεῖραξ girl, lass, (in Hellenistic Greek use) boy, cognate with a group of words for young men and women (see marry v.) + -ίδιον -idium comb. form. Hellenistic Greek μειρακίδιον > classical Latin mīracidion youth (only recorded in an 8th–cent. epitome). Compare also ancient Greek μειράκιον boy, lad. Compare miracidial adj.
Zoology.
A digenean trematode (parasitic fluke) in the ciliated free-swimming larval stage, in which form it passes from the definitive host to the first intermediate host (typically a snail), forming a sporocyst. Cf. Cercaria n.
