Etymology: Italian, lit. ‘live’, 3rd person singular present subjunctive of vivere ( < Latin vīvĕre ) to live. So Spanish viva , Portuguese viva . Compare vivat int. and n.
A cry of ‘long live’ as a salute or greeting; a shout of applause; a cheer or hurrah:
a. As a n., in the plural vivas.
