An ethnic or racial group whose members are visibly distinguishable from those of the predominant ethnic or racial group in a society; (usually) spec. a non-white ethnic or racial group. Also: a member of such a group. Often as a modifier.In quot. 1940 perhaps not a fixed collocation.In Canada now used spec. to denote non-indigenous minority groups.The term has sometimes been criticized: see, e.g., quot. 2007.
