A speech sound articulated with no obstruction of the airstream; a vocalic speech sound. Frequently contrasted with contoid n. or non-vocoid n.Coined by the American linguist Kenneth Pike in order to refer specifically to a vowel as defined phonetically (by the way in which it is articulated), rather than a vowel as a phonological unit.
