Etymology: Of doubtful origin: perhaps < Old French escu shield (compare Latin scutulātus as a colour of a horse, < scutula platter), but there is also close resemblance in form and sense to Icelandic skjóttr, the history of which is equally obscure.
? Obsolete.
Skewbald. In quot. 1495 the reading of the Bodleian MS. is scawed, translating maculosum of the original.
