Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Pali. Partly a borrowing from Sanskrit. Etymons: Pali vinaya, Sanskrit vinaya.
Etymology: < (i) Pali vinaya body of rules for Buddhist monastic life (nominative singular vinayo) and its etymon (ii) Sanskrit vinaya discipline, propriety, (in Buddhist Sanskrit also) body of rules for monastic life, verbal noun of vinī- to lead away < vi- away, apart (ultimately related to the first element of the Germanic base of wither adj.) + nī- to lead.Compare the following slightly earlier example of the Sanskrit word cited in an English context:1832 Jrnl. Asiatic Soc. Bengal 1 1 The first [division of the Káh-gyur, the Tibetan Buddhist canon], or Dul-vá, termed in Sanscrit Vinaya, Decorum or Discipline, occupied 13 volumes. N.E.D. (1917) gives the pronunciation as (vinaya·) /vinaˈja/.
Buddhism.
The body of regulations concerning Buddhist monastic life; spec. (chiefly with the) (the name of) one of the three divisions of the Tripitaka, the sacred canon of Theravada Buddhism. Also as a count noun: an individual text of this type. Cf. Pitaka n.
