Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from French. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Etymons: French vagina; Latin vāgīna.
Etymology: < (i) French vagina (1609 in the passage translated in quot. 1612 at sense 1a; now vagin (1676)), and its etymon (ii) classical Latin vāgīna sheath, scabbard, natural structure resembling a sheath, especially applied to the husk that encloses an ear of corn before it emerges, perhaps < the same Indo-European base as Lithuanian vožti to shut, to cover, or perhaps a loanword.With sense 3 compare French gaîne sheath, pedestal supporting a bust.

In humans and other mammals: the part of the female reproductive tract that leads from the vulva to the uterus, consisting of a tube with an inner lining of squamous epithelium, a middle layer of muscle, and an outer layer of connective tissue.Marsupials, unlike placental mammals, have two uteri, each with its own vagina; the vaginas enter a single birth canal.
