urbi et orbiadv.n.adj.

Brit. /ˈəːbɪ ɛt ˈɔːbi/, U.S. /ˈərbi ɛt ˈɔrbi/

Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin urbi et orbi.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin urbi et orbi to the city (of Rome) and to the world (1750 in French context) < classical Latin urbī , dative of urbs city (see urban adj.) + et and + orbī , dative of orbis orb n.1Already in classical Latin the words urbs and orbis are frequently collocated, as in Ovid Fasti 2. 684 Romanae spatium est urbis et orbis idem ‘the extent of the City of Rome and the world is one’. The collocation is applied to Popes by the end of the 8th cent.: Tu decus Ecclesiae, fax splendens urbis et orbis ‘You glory of the church, blazing torch of the city and of the world’ (Theodulf of Orleans Carmina c795). The form of words urbi et orbi occurs a1276 in the ritual for the investiture of a new Pope in the Ordo Romanus ... jussu Gregorii X, in investio te de Papatu Romano, ut praesis urbi et orbi ‘I invest you in the Roman papacy and you preside over the city and the world’. In the genitive, it is prefixed to official documents by 1670: Urbis, et orbis. Concessio ut in toto orbe terrarum celebrari possit Missa B. Rosae ex voto, vel devotione ‘Of the city, and the world. A concession that the mass of the Blessed Rose may be celebrated in the whole world by prayer or devotion’, issued with Extensio concessinis [sic] officij, & missae B. Rosae de Sancta Maria Tertij Ordinis S. Dominici pro vniuerso clero Regnorum Poloniae, Ducatu Lituaniae &c. (Rome, 1670).
