Origin: A borrowing from German, combined with an English element; probably modelled on a German lexical item. Etymons: German Mah , Moh , seed n.
Etymology: < German †Mah, †Moh poppy (German Mohn ; Middle High German māhen , Old High German māhen , cognate with Dutch maan poppy-seed, Dutch regional (Holland) māne (see mecop n.), Old Saxon māho poppy (Middle Low German mān , maen ), all perhaps ultimately < the same base as meconium n.) + seed n., probably after a later reflex of Middle High German māge-sāt; compare German regional (Silesia) Moh-saat, German Magsame (14th cent. in Middle High German as māge-sāme). Compare also Middle Dutch maensaet (Dutch maanzaad).
The oil-yielding seed of the opium poppy, Papaver somniferum subsp. somniferum, which is typically blue-grey and is used to feed cage birds; a seed of this type. Also: the opium poppy itself (rare).
