Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin uranisco-.
Etymology: < scientific Latin uranisco-, combining form (1834, in uraniscorrhaphe , or earlier) of post-classical Latin uraniscus roof of the mouth (4th cent.; < Hellenistic Greek οὐρανίσκος roof of the mouth < ancient Greek οὐρανός heaven, roof of the mouth (see urano- comb. form1) + -ίσκος , diminutive suffix); compare -o- connective. Compare urano- comb. form1 2.Found in a small number of formations illustrated below.
Surgery and Medicine. Obsolete. rare.
Forming terms relating to surgical operations and medical conditions affecting the palate, esp. the hard palate. Cf. urano- comb. form1 2.
