Origin: Formed within English, by derivation. Etymon: up adv.¹

Etymology: A playfully extended form of up adv.¹, probably after lack-a-day int. or lackadaisy int. (although attested earlier than the latter). The earliest form may perhaps have been upaday, although this is only recorded in later regional use (in England and the U.S., from the 19th cent. onwards).

colloquial (now chiefly regional).

Used to express encouragement or reassurance, typically when assisting someone (esp. a child) to overcome a physical obstacle, recover from a fall, etc., or when lifting a child into the air. Cf. upsadaisy int.
