Etymology: Originally (in sense 1) < un- prefix1 + probate v. + -ed suffix1, probably after classical Latin improbātus in uncertain sense, perhaps ‘not tested or approved’. In sense 2 independently < un- prefix1 + probated adj. at probate v. Derivatives.
