Etymology: < smell n. or smell v. + -o- + vision n., modelled on the names of other proprietary production techniques, as VistaVision , etc.; compare also television n.

A style or technique of cinematographic presentation in which pictures on the screen are accompanied not only by sound but also by appropriate smells released into the auditorium. (The process has not been widely used.) Cf. smellie n.A proprietary name in the U.S. for a similar special-effects technique involving ‘scent-emitting stickers’ with televised film ( Official Gaz. (U.S. Patent Office), 1986, 16 Dec. tm126/1).
