单词 -labe
释义

-labecomb. form

Primary stress is retained by the usual stressed syllable of the preceding element; see e.g. nocturlabe n.
Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French -labe.
Etymology: < Middle French, French -labe (in e.g. astrelabe astrolabe n.) < ancient Greek -λάβος (in e.g. ἐργολάβος contractor), in Hellenistic Greek also -λάβον (in e.g. μεσολάβον mesolabe n.) < λαβ-, stem of λαμβάνειν to take, of uncertain origin.Compare classical Latin -labus (in e.g. mesolabus mesolabe n.), post-classical Latin -labium (in e.g. astrolabium astrolabe n.). Attested in a small number of words. Earliest in borrowings from French, as astrolabe n. (14th cent.), cosmolabe n., mesolabe n. (both 16th cent.). nocturlabe n. probably shows an isolated early formation within English; more certain English formations are found from the 19th cent.
