Origin: Probably formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: bania n., chow n.
Etymology: Probably < bania n. + chow n.Compare: 1984 Daily News (Durban , S. Afr.) 16 Jan. In those days all Gugerati Hindu businessmen were called ‘Banias’, so we called our take-away lunches ‘Bunia Chow’. On my return to Durban in 1981 after an absence of over 25 years, I noted ‘Bunny Chow’ had become a household name.
South African.
A South African dish consisting of a hollowed-out loaf of bread (or part of a loaf) filled with curry, typically sold as takeaway food; a serving of this.
