Etymology: < Afrikaans brommer blowfly, bluebottle (Dutch brommer (1858; < brommen to hum, buzz: see brum v.)) + fly n.¹ Compare Dutch bromvlieg bluebottle (1863 in this sense; 1810 denoting the gadfly).

A flesh fly of semi-desert regions in southern Africa, Wohlfahrtia pachytyli (family Sarcophagidae), which sometimes deposits its larvae as parasites on the brown locust ( Locustana pardalina). More usually called locust fly.
