Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French brouillement.
Etymology: < French brouillement (late 15th cent. in Middle French; 1419 as brullemens ) < brouiller broil v.2 + -ment -ment suffix. Compare brulyie n. Compare earlier broil n.1 N.E.D. (1888) also recorded a form broilment glossed ‘commotion, disturbance, embroilment’, but supporting evidence for this has not been found.
