Nevertheless, the Samuel Wilson legend became so well known that in 1961 the U.S. Congress passed a resolution to honour Samuel Wilson as the ‘progenitor’ of the personification of the United States. It is unclear whether an early instance of Uncle Sam in an early version of the song Yankee Doodle (a1783) refers to an actual person named Sam or to the American colonies collectively.
