Etymology: < Latin tympanum, tympanum n., or < Old French tympan, timpan (12th cent. in Hatzfeld & Darmesteter; modern French tympan, = Portuguese tympano, Spanish timpano, Italian timpano, in various senses). Compare Old High German timpana, Old Icelandic timpan. In Old English and early Middle English only in renderings of Biblical passages.
