Origin: Formed within English, by compounding; modelled on a German lexical item. Etymons: brown adj., shirt n.
Etymology: < brown adj. + shirt n., after German Braunhemd in the same sense (1926 or earlier; with reference to the uniform worn by members of the organization), itself after Schwarzhemd member of Italy's National Fascist Party (see Blackshirt n.).
colloquial.
An informal name for: a member of the S.A. (see Sturmabteilung n.), a paramilitary wing of the Nazi party, active in the 1920s and early 1930s (now historical). Also in extended use (hyperbolically and depreciative): a person who is perceived to be authoritarian, autocratic, inflexible, etc.
