Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Romanian. Partly a borrowing from French. Etymons: Romanian ţigan; French tzigane.

Etymology: Partly (i) < Romanian ţigan, and partly (ii) < French tzigane, tsigane (15th cent. in Middle French as cigain ), both ultimately < medieval Greek τσίγγανος (modern Greek τσιγγάνος ), shortened < ἀτσίγγανος < Byzantine Greek ἀδίγγανος (end of the 8th cent.), ἀθίγγανος (6th cent.) member of a sect of heretics living mainly in Phrygia and Lycaonia, literally ‘that does not wish to be touched’ < ἀ- a- prefix⁶ + θιγγάνειν to touch < the same Indo-European base as classical Latin fingere to form, mould (see feign v.).
