单词 tulchan
释义

tulchann.

Brit. /ˈtʌlx(ə)n/, /ˈtʌlk(ə)n/, U.S. /ˈtəlk(ə)n/, Scottish English /ˈtʌlx(ə)n/
Forms: 1500s tulchen, 1500s–1800s tulchin, 1800s tulchane, 1700s– tulchan.
Etymology: < Gaelic tulchan, apparently local variant of tulachan ‘little hillock’, applied locally to a device used to induce a cow to give her milk: still so called in the Outer Hebrides, and in Moidart in Inverness-shire, and probably more widely in the 16th cent. The cow is allowed to sniff at the skin of her own calf, which may be stuffed with straw or hay, but is often merely spread over the bottom of a creel or a small heap or hump of earth or turf, whence apparently the name ‘little hillock’. The etymology given in Highland Society's Dict., 1828, is erroneous.
