Tuesdayn.adv.Brit. /ˈtjuːzdeɪ/, /ˈtʃuːzdeɪ/, /ˈtjuːzdi/, /ˈtʃuːzdi/, U.S. /ˈt(j)uzˌdeɪ/, /ˈt(j)uzdi/ Origin: A word inherited from Germanic; modelled on a Latin lexical item. Etymology: Originally cognate with or formed similarly to Old Frisian tīesdei , Old High German ziestag , Middle High German zīstag (German regional (south-eastern) Ziestag , (south-eastern and Swiss) Ziestig ) < the genitive of the Germanic base of the name of (the god) Tiw (see note) + the Germanic base of day n., after post-classical Latin dies Martis day of (the planet) Mars (4th cent. but probably earlier; frequently from c1135 in British sources; compare classical Latin Martis diēs ; compare also Hellenistic Greek Ἄρεος ἡμέρα ); in β. forms reinforced by early Scandinavian (compare Old Icelandic týsdagr, týrsdagr, Old Swedish tisdagher (Swedish tisdag), Old Danish tisdag (Danish tirsdag)), itself apparently after forms in West Germanic languages. The Latin days of the week in imperial Rome were named after the planets, which in turn were named after gods (see discussion at week n.). In most cases the Germanic names have substituted for the Roman god's name that of a comparable one from the Germanic pantheon. The sky-god Tiw was originally also a god of war, like the Roman Mars. For the identification of the two gods compare also quot. OE at sense A. and the following gloss:eOE Corpus Gloss. (1890) 76/2 Mars, martis, tiig. The name of Tiw (Old English Tīw , Old Saxon Tiu , Old High German Ziu (in Ziuwari , the name of a people), Old Icelandic Týr ) derives < a Germanic base cognate with classical Latin deus , ancient Greek Διός (genitive), Gaulish deuo- , dio- (in compounds and names), Early Irish día god (Irish dia ), Old Welsh duiu god (Welsh duw ), compare Sanskrit dyāuḥ (nominative singular of div ) sky, sky-god, (with different ablaut grade) deva god, divine. Compare ( < classical Latin Martis dies ) Anglo-Norman and Old French, Middle French, French mardi (1119 as marsdi ), Old Occitan dimarz , dimartz (c1150; Occitan dimars ), mars (c1200; Occitan mars ), Catalan dimarts (late 13th cent.), Spanish martes (c1090), Italian martedì (1238 as martidie ). Compare Middle Dutch dinsendach , dinxendach , dinsendach (Dutch dinsdag ), Middle Low German dingesdach , dinsedach ( > German Dienstag ), perhaps an independent formation < the Germanic base of a name preserved as post-classical Latin Thingsus , used as an epithet of Mars (3rd cent. in an inscription by a Frisian military unit in Britain; of uncertain origin, perhaps ultimately < the Germanic base of thing n.1) + the Germanic base of day n. Compare also Middle High German zinstag, German regional (south-eastern) Zienstag, Zienstig, Zeinstag, etc. A. n.the world > time > period > a day or twenty-four hours > specific days > [noun] > Tuesday OE Byrhtferð (Ashm.)
