Etymology: < writhe v. + neck n.1, after wryneck n.Not the etymon of the much earlier wryneck n., as sometimes suggested (compare e.g. quot. 1840).

A bird of the genus Jynx; = wryneck n. 1a.The name alludes to the bird's habit of twisting its head though a large angle, especially in display when disturbed.

1840 W. Macgillivray Hist. Brit. Birds III. 103 The name of Wryneck is derived from its habit of moving its head and neck in various directions, and probably was originally Writheneck, corresponding to Torquilla and Torticollis.
1885 C. Swainson Provinc. Names Brit. Birds 103 Wryneck (Jynx torquilla). So called from the extraordinary pliancy of its neck; whence also Writhe neck.
2018 G. Gorman Woodpeckers 110 Writheneck and Snakebird obviously refer to the Wryneck's habit of twisting its neck.
