Origin: A variant or alteration of another lexical item. Etymon: terrine n.
Etymology: Originally a variant of terrine n.With the form turenne perhaps compare the name of Henri de la Tour d'Auvergne, Vicomte de Turenne (1611–75), French officer and (from 1660) Marshal General of France. Turenne is sometimes (apocryphally) said to have drunk soup out of his helmet, which served as the basis for a speculative etymology of the name of the vessel.
A deep earthenware or plated vessel (usually oval) with a lid, from which soup is served. Also: a smaller vessel of similar shape for sauce or gravy.
