Etymology: < medieval Latin Turcopōlus (Orderic. Vital.) -pūlus (Matt. Paris), Turcoplus (Roger Hoveden), in Byzantine Greek Τουρκόπουλοι or -πουλα , according to Albert Aq. (in Du Cange) < Τουρκο- Turk n.1 + πῶλος foal, young animal, in late Greek ‘child’, Latin pullus young animal, applied to children of a Turkish or Saracen father and Greek mother. So Old French turcople.
