Origin: From a proper name. Etymon: proper name Widal.
Etymology: < the name of Georges Fernand Isidor Widal (1862–1929), French physician, who (with Jean Athanase Sicard) described the test in 1896 ( Bull. & Mém. de la Soc. méd. des hopitaux de Paris 13 681).
Pathology.
As a modifier, chiefly in the genitive. Designating a laboratory test used in the diagnosis of typhoid and other salmonella infections, based on the ability of the patient's serum to agglutinate a sample of the relevant bacteria; of or relating to this test.
