Etymology: < brethren, variant plural form of brother n. + -hood suffix. Compare earlier brotherhood n.Apparently re-formed in the early 20th century. Compare the following, showing a parallel formation in -head suffix:a1536 W. Tyndale Obed. Christen Man 126/2 in W. Tyndale et al. Wks. (1573) Howbeit such maner sendynges are not worldly,..as Friers send their limiters to gather their brethrenhedes which must obey whether they will or will not.
