单词 brough
释义

broughn.

Forms: Also 1700s–1800s brugh, 1800s dialect bruff.
Origin: Apparently a borrowing from early Scandinavian. Etymon: Norse borg.
Etymology: apparently < Old Norse borg, in sense of ‘wall, enclosure’: compare the German term hof ‘yard, court, area’, applied to the same phenomenon; the comparison being to the outer wall of a feudal castle. Brough , brugh /brʌx/, now in northern English dialect bruff /brʊf/, is the northern form; southern forms are burr n.1, and burrow n.5, in Promp. Parv. burwhe . (The word thus appears in origin identical with broch n.2, brough round tower.)
