Origin: Formed within English, by derivation; modelled on a French lexical item. Etymons: acidify v., -ing suffix2.
Etymology: < acidify v. + -ing suffix2, after French acidifiant (1781 in the passage translated in quot. 1783). Compare slightly later acidifiant adj.
Originally: (Chemistry) combining with other substances to form acids (= acidifiant adj.); chiefly in acidifying principle; now historical. In later use more widely: generating acid, causing increased acidity (cf. acidify v.).
