单词 | -itious |
释义 | -itioussuffix1 Compound suffix of adjectives, < Latin -ici-us or -īci-us + -ous suffix. These Latin endings, from the confusion of c and t in late and medieval Latin manuscripts, were formerly written -itius, whence the current English spelling for the etymologically correct -icious. The Latin adjectives were of two classes: 1. those in -icius from nouns, as ciner-icius of the nature of ashes, gentīl-icius of the clansmen, tribūn-icius of a tribune 2. those in -īcius from past participles, as advent-īcius characterized by having come in from without, adscript-īcius of the class of the adscripti, comment-īcius of an invented sort, conduct-īcius of a hired sort, fact-īcius of a made sort, fict-īcius of a feigned sort, supposit-īcius of a substituted nature. These are anglicized with the suffix -ous, as in ascript-itious, comment-itious, conduct-itious, fact-itious, fict-itious, supposit-itious; and the formation is freely extended when required, as in abstractitious, adscititious, excrementitious, etc. This entry has not yet been fully updated (first published 1900; most recently modified version published online September 2019). -itioussuffix2 A combination of the suffix -ous suffix, representing Latin -ōsus, with derivatives containing iti-, or īti-, of various kinds, chiefly nouns in -itiōn-em; e.g. ambition, ambitious, Latin ambitiōsus, superstition, superstitious, Latin superstitiōsus; so nutritious, seditious, etc.: see -ious suffix, -ous suffix.
